Things to do when you're bored of everything

Boredom can be caused by a number of things, but it’s mainly linked to feeling stuck in a tedious or dreary routine.

It can occur at any time, when we are doing housework, cooking, working, studying or waiting in line.

It can even come up when we are doing something we would normally enjoy, such as gaming, watching TV or reading.

‘Boredom can lead to many negative activities such as scrolling on your phone, avoiding daily tasks or making more mess,’ adds wellness expert Tyler Woodard from Eden’s Gate.

‘But there are some great things to do when you are bored that involve more productive tasks.’

Here are some tips to help if you are feeling stuck in a rut and are tired of your monotonous daily routine.

Write down your thoughts

Find out why you are bored.

‘Writing down what you are thinking, whether this be positive or negative, is great for acknowledging and processing your thoughts,’ explains Tyler. ‘And it could also be used in a more creative way, allowing yourself to become a potential storyteller or personal therapist.’

Plan your week

‘A very easy task that can help with the structure of your routine is to plan what you need to do or want to get done throughout the week,’ says Tyler. 

‘You can write down or note your day-to-day tasks including work, social life, any meals/recipes you wish to make or even what you want to wear that week too.’

Learn a new language 

This will keep you occupied for hours and will be such a useful new skill to have – and its a great excuse to go travelling.

‘Learning a new language is a fantastic skill to possess and can be achieved in short spells of practice – just 15 minutes a day could go a long way,’ recommends Tyler. ‘This can be done by registering with an online class, through an app on your phone, or reading through a book on languages too.’

Change things up

Maybe you are bored because the book you are reading isn’t gripping enough, or maybe the tv series you started watching has annoying characters. Whatever the reason, it’s clear you’re not loving it, so give up.

Life is too short to spend time on something you’re not enjoying, so pick up a new book from your to-be-read pile and start a new series off your wish list.

You could even try getting into a genre you normally avoid – you never know, it could open you up to a whole load of other content to dive into.

Play games 

Try playing a board game next time you are feeling bored.

Get a group of friends, your family or the people you live with to set aside an evening for a games night. You could even make an evening of it, with drinks, snacks and good music.

Or if playing solo is more your thing, try puzzles or new video games.

Gardening

Not only will your outside space look beautiful, but this hobby could also help your mental health.

‘The best way to stave off boredom is to keep your mind active and engaged. One way to do this is to find a hobby or activity that you enjoy, and that keeps your mind active and engaged,’ says Deborah Looi, a plant expert and founder of GardeningCollective. 

‘Gardening can be a fun and relaxing way to spend your free time, and it is also an excellent way to get some fresh produce into your diet. 

‘It can be rewarding in its own right. Not only do you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour, but you may also learn new skills that you can use in other aspects of your life.

‘The act of nurturing plants and watching them grow is a deeply satisfying experience. For me, gardening is a meditative process where I can forget about my worries, and it also allows me to connect with nature and find a sense of peace and tranquillity.

‘When I’m working in my garden, I just focus on the task at hand. I also enjoy the physical labour involved in gardening, and it’s a great way to get some exercise.

‘And gardening is a hobby that you can enjoy year-round.’

Try a new sport

If fitness is your thing, why not start a new club?

‘Pickleball is a great hobby to try,’ says Jon Callahan, the Founder and CEO of PickleVine.

‘It’s a sport that combines elements of tennis and ping pong. It is played with a small ball (usually about the size of a softball) on an enclosed court using rackets and balls similar to those used in tennis or Ping Pong. 

‘The object of the game is to hit the ball into your opponent’s court, either by hitting it off the wall, across the net, or directly into their pocket.

The sport is becoming popular due to its low-impact nature and social aspect. 

‘It can be played as part of an hour-long workout session or as part of a fun afternoon activity with friends. And it is absolutely a perfect sport to do when bored. It is so much fun, low cost, and easily accessible,’ adds Jon.

Meditation

Tyler suggests that if you find yourself feeling bored and in your own thoughts about what to do next, take a step back and relax and try to meditate.

He says: ‘Taking a few minutes each day to meditate and collect your thoughts is a great way to focus your attention on what is important to you and therefore can decide on what positive and productive things you want to achieve moving forward.’
